Real Story of the Week: How Jalen uses writing to cope with depression. What creative outlets do you use to help you cope?

Don’t ever sell yourself short. Stand tall. Never be ashamed of who you are. You are beautiful, you are loved. You are needed. You are worth it. Promise me you won’t forget that. Promise me you won’t let your scars define who you are. Let your trials shape you. Let your victories humble you.

There are a million reasons to call the Lifeline. What’s yours?

We’re so excited that Keke Palmer (star of Akeela & the Bee and Joyful Noise) made a “Reasons to Call” sign! Now it’s your turn to make a sign telling people why they should call 1-800-273-TALK for the world to see. E-mail your pic to awomble@mhaofnyc.org and we’ll post it on Tumblr.

  1. Please encourage your friend to call us at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). All calls are routed to the Lifeline center closest to the caller’s area code. The local crisis center may have resources such as counseling or in-patient treatment centers.
  2. If your friend has posted a suicidal comment on Facebook, you can report it here, and Facebook will send them a message with the option to chat directly with a counselor.
  3. Be willing to listen. Show interest in what your friend is saying even if it seems depressing.
  4. Don’t be afraid to talk matter-of-factly about suicide.
  5. Feel free to call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) yourself so that you can get advice specific to your city or state and  find out what resources are available in your area.
  6. Be proactive and remove guns or stockpiled pills.
  7. Try not to be judgmental. This is not the time to debate the value of life.
  8. Call 911 if you feel your friend is in immediate danger of harming themselves.
  9. Don’t be sworn to secrecy. Suicidal thoughts should not be kept secret.
  10. Offer hope and encouragement that these feelings will go away if your friend seeks help.

Great news!  The actress Keke Palmer (star of Akeela & the Bee and Joyful News) is a fan of the Lifeline. Her anti-bullying campaign Oath Project  is now teaming up with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to help prevent suicide.
Reblog this if you promise to call 1-800-273-TALK (8255) if you are overwhelmed by bullying or need emotional support.
